TL;DR

Google Zero describes a version of Google Search where queries still happen but clicks largely do not, because AI Overviews and AI Mode resolve the question on the results page. Visibility has not become less valuable. It has become separated from traffic. Your company can now be recommended without being visited, and eliminated without ever knowing it was considered.

A common Search Console pattern now looks contradictory at first: impressions climb steadily while clicks stay flat. Nothing is technically broken, no penalty is visible, and no competitor has obviously taken over the rankings.

Traffic has not necessarily collapsed. It has become decoupled from visibility.

This is what people mean by Google Zero, and it is the most significant structural change to search since mobile. It is also widely misunderstood, because the obvious conclusion, that search matters less, is close to the opposite of what the available evidence shows.

Google Zero does not make search visibility less important. It makes visibility possible without traffic. The recommendation now happens before the visit, and increasingly instead of it, which means the goal shifts from earning the click to being the company named inside the answer, then being worth choosing when someone finally does arrive.

That is the short version. The rest of this article covers what the data actually says, what Google itself has published about how to respond, and what a practical response looks like for a company that depends on its website to generate pipeline.

What Google Zero actually means

Google Zero is shorthand for zero-click search, not zero search. People are searching as much as ever. What has changed is what happens after the query.

Google has been shifting from a directory that routes you elsewhere to a decision engine that answers in place. AI Overviews summarize the answer above the traditional results. AI Mode goes further, researching, comparing, and following up across a conversation without the user leaving the results page at all.

For a publisher, this reads as a traffic problem. For a company selling a product or service, it is something more specific and more dangerous: your buyer can now complete the research, comparison, and shortlisting stages of their decision without visiting a single vendor website.

Including yours.

The distinction that matters

There is a meaningful difference between two situations that look identical in your analytics:

  • You were considered and rejected. The model read your site, found it unclear or unconvincing, and named someone else.
  • You were never in the answer at all. The model could not determine what you do, who you serve, or whether you were credible, so you were not a candidate.

Neither produces a line in your reporting. No impression, no bounce, no session recording of someone leaving. Both look exactly like a quiet week.

This is the part most teams have not internalized. Under the old model, losing was visible. You ranked eleventh, or your bounce rate was poor, or your demo page leaked. Under Google Zero, the most expensive losses generate no data whatsoever.

What the research actually shows

The clearest evidence available comes from the Pew Research Center, which analyzed real browsing behavior rather than survey responses.

Pew tracked 900 US adults who agreed to share their browsing data, covering roughly 69,000 Google searches during March 2025. About 12,600 of those searches produced an AI-generated summary. In the Pew Research Center analysis of AI summaries and click behavior, the pattern was consistent:

Three things are worth pulling out of that table.

Clicks roughly halved. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked through at 8% compared with 15% otherwise. That is the headline number, and it is the one most commonly quoted.

The citation links are barely used. Only 1% of visits produced a click on a source cited inside the summary. This matters enormously for how you should think about being cited. Being named in an AI answer is primarily a branding and shortlisting event, not a traffic event. If your entire case for AI visibility rests on referral clicks, the data does not support it.

Sessions end more often. Users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% without. The summary does not just redirect the journey. It frequently concludes it.

One important caveat, and it is one that most articles quoting this study omit: the Pew data is from March 2025. AI Mode has rolled out since, and AI Overview coverage has expanded considerably. Nobody has published anything of comparable rigor since, which itself says something about the state of measurement in this category. Treat these figures as the best available baseline, not as current conditions.

Google’s own reporting confirms the shift

In June 2026, Google added dedicated Generative AI performance reports to Search Console. According to Google’s Search Central announcement, the reports give site owners a dedicated view of impressions within generative AI features on Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as generative AI features in Discover.

The reports break impressions down by page, country, device, and date.

They do not include clicks. Or click-through rate. Or query data.

This deserves more attention than it has received. Google built dedicated reporting infrastructure for AI visibility, and the single thing it cannot tell you is what that visibility delivered. The Search Console documentation for the generative AI performance report confirms the dimensions available, and clicks are not among them.

Read that as a product decision rather than an incomplete feature. Google shipped a visibility metric deliberately decoupled from traffic, because appearing in an answer has become a distinct outcome from receiving a visit. That is Google Zero expressed as a dashboard.

There are two practical limitations worth knowing before you go looking for the report. It is rolling out gradually, so not every property has access yet. And AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover AI features are currently combined into a single view, so you cannot isolate which surface is driving a given impression count.

The buyer journey moved upstream

The traditional path looked like this:

Search → click → website → evaluation → decision

The path that is replacing it looks more like this:

Question → AI answer → shortlist → verification visit → decision

The critical change is where the shortlist gets formed. It used to happen on your website, after the click, on ground you controlled. It now happens inside the answer, before the visit, using whatever the model could extract from your site and from what others have written about you.

By the time a buyer arrives, the shortlist already exists. The visit is no longer discovery. It is verification.

This has a counterintuitive consequence that most zero-click commentary misses entirely. As click volume falls, the value of each remaining click rises sharply. The people who do arrive are further along, better qualified, and often carrying a recommendation. Your website has fewer chances to work and more riding on each one.

What Google says you should actually do about it

Here is where most articles on this topic quietly avoid the primary source.

In May 2026, Google published its first official guidance on optimizing for generative AI features. The position stated in Google’s documentation on AI features and your website is direct: the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, there are no additional requirements to appear in them, and no other special optimizations are necessary.

The guide goes further. It states that you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features, and that there is no special schema.org structured data required. As Semrush’s coverage of the guidance noted, the document is organized as a consolidation of positions Google had already stated in scattered venues, now with the weight of official documentation behind it. It includes a mythbusting section dismissing several popular tactics, including llms.txt files and rewriting content specifically for machines.

A significant portion of the AI search industry would prefer you did not read that page.

We think it is the most useful thing Google has published on this topic, because it eliminates the tactical framing. There is no file to upload. There is no schema trick. Generative AI features run on the same core ranking systems as the rest of Search, which means the work of being retrievable and the work of being rankable are largely the same work.

What remains is harder than a plugin: being genuinely clear about what your company is, structurally accessible to systems that need to parse you, and backed by enough independent evidence that a model has reason to treat you as credible.

That is a positioning and engineering problem. It is why we approach AI Search Visibility as an extension of brand and site architecture rather than as a separate optimization layer bolted on afterwards.

Where the honest disagreement sits

Google’s guidance applies to Google. It is explicitly about AI Overviews and AI Mode, which draw on Google’s index and ranking systems.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude are not running on Google’s index. They retrieve differently, weight sources differently, and in our own measurement they behave very differently from one another. Treating Google’s “nothing special required” guidance as universal across all AI surfaces would be a mistake.

The defensible position is this: for Google, do excellent conventional SEO and stop looking for shortcuts. For the wider set of answer engines, the fundamentals are similar but the source weighting differs enough that third-party mentions and entity consistency carry more weight than they do for Google alone.

Every company is judged twice

The framework we use for this is simple. Every company is now judged twice, in a fixed order, by two judges that want completely different evidence.

The machine judge goes first. It reads structure, content, citations, and consistency. It feels nothing. If it cannot determine who you are and what you do, you are not named in the answer, and the buyer never learns you exist.

The human judge goes second. They decide in roughly three seconds, on instinct, before a single fact registers. They are assessing whether you look like a company worth taking seriously.

Fail the first and you never meet the second. Pass the first and fail the second and you have built an efficient system for losing deals you were shortlisted for.

Google Zero raises the stakes on both simultaneously. Fewer buyers reach your site, and the ones who do arrive pre-qualified and expecting the site to justify the recommendation they were just handed. Being cited by every model in existence is worth very little if the homepage that greets the resulting visitor looks like four hundred others in your category.

The tidy version of this argument is that design serves humans and technical work serves machines. That version is wrong, and acting on it produces sites that are mediocre at both.

Clear information hierarchy is extractable hierarchy. Real text rather than type baked into images is the difference between existing and not existing. A homepage that plainly states what you do, who it is for, and what it costs reads well to a person precisely because it is unambiguous, and that same unambiguity is the only reason a model can use you as an answer to anything.

Meanwhile brand consistency across the web is entity clarity. The same company name, the same description, and the same positioning on your site, your LinkedIn, your case studies, and every directory you appear in is a brand discipline problem that happens to be one of the largest factors in whether a model can resolve who you are.

What to measure when clicks stop being the measure

If traffic is no longer a reliable proxy for visibility, you need different questions. These are the ones we work through with clients.

  1. Are you included in the answers that matter? Take the five questions your buyers genuinely ask and run them across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude in clean sessions. Record whether you appear at all.
  2. Who is named instead of you? Competitor presence in your category’s answers is now a legitimate competitive metric, and almost nobody tracks it systematically.
  3. Is your positioning represented accurately? Being named with the wrong description is its own failure mode. Whatever the model says about your company is functionally your positioning at the moment of decision, delivered by a source your buyer trusts more than your homepage.
  4. Which sources are shaping the answer? Models weight third-party mentions heavily, and reasonably so. Your own site is marketing. A mention on someone else’s is evidence.
  5. Can a machine actually parse your site? Plain statements of what you do, who it serves, and what it costs. Real text in the raw HTML. Consistent naming across every surface. Content that renders without JavaScript.
  6. Does the site hold up when someone does arrive? The remaining clicks are fewer and better qualified. Each one now carries more weight than it did two years ago.

Common mistakes companies make responding to Google Zero

Treating it as a traffic problem to be solved with more content

The instinct when clicks fall is to publish more. If the underlying issue is that a model cannot determine what your company does or why it is credible, volume compounds the ambiguity rather than resolving it. Structure and clarity come first. Buying tactical AI SEO packages

Given that Google has explicitly stated no special optimization is required for its AI features, be cautious about vendors selling AI-specific technical packages as though a hidden mechanism exists. Ask what the deliverable actually changes about how clearly your company is represented.

Ignoring the human half because it has no dashboard

This is the trap we expect to damage the most companies over the next few years, and not for the reason people assume. It will not be because teams ignored AI. It will be because AI visibility arrived with a dashboard, and the dashboard won every budget argument against the half of the work that could not produce one.

Citations are measurable. Whether your brand made someone trust you is not. Only one of those will show up in a report, and it is not the one that closes deals. If your visual identity is undermining your credibility with serious buyers, the enterprise trust gap is a more urgent problem than your citation count.

Hiding your pricing and your specifics

Buyers ask models about cost constantly. If every company in your category conceals pricing, the model answers from forum threads and outdated third-party articles. You have effectively outsourced your price positioning to strangers. Publishing a range, or at minimum the shape of what drives cost, keeps that narrative under your control.

Letting entity ambiguity accumulate

Multiple company names, a legacy domain still ranking, case studies under an old brand, inconsistent descriptions across directories. Each one individually seems minor. Collectively they split your credibility across several half-formed versions of your company, none of which a model can confidently recommend.

What we would actually do first

If you are looking at flat clicks against rising impressions, the sequence we would follow is roughly this.

Establish where you stand. Run the five buyer questions across the major models. Check whether the Search Console generative AI report is available for your property yet. Note what gets said about you, not just whether you appear.

Fix entity clarity before anything else. One company name, one description, one positioning statement, applied consistently everywhere you exist online. This is the cheapest high-impact work available and most companies have never audited it.

Make the fundamental claims extractable. What you do, who it is for, what it costs, what proof exists. In plain text, in the raw HTML, on pages a crawler can reach without executing JavaScript.

Then improve the site’s conversion quality. Fewer, better-qualified visits mean the site must do more work per visitor. A conversion audit is more valuable now than it was when traffic was abundant, and our 21-day conversion audit framework is a reasonable starting structure.

Then build third-party presence. Mentions on domains you do not own are the one input your own publishing cannot manufacture.

The honest limitation

Nobody can currently connect AI visibility to revenue with confidence.

Google’s own report shows impressions with no clicks attached. Third-party trackers each observe a different slice of a fragmented picture, and their methodologies disagree. None of them confirm what a human being actually saw. There is no ground truth available anywhere in this category right now.

Anyone selling you certainty here is selling you a dashboard.

What is measurable is whether you appear, what gets said when you do, and who appears in your place. That is worth knowing even without attribution, in roughly the same way you would want to know if a competitor was being recommended in every sales conversation you were not invited to.

Because that is what this is. A continuous conversation about your category, happening at scale, that you are not in the room for.
